Graffiti-removal costs depend on more than the size of the mark. Surface material, paint type, access, preparation and the work needed to protect the surrounding area all influence a quotation.
Size is a starting point
The approximate width and height of the graffiti help a contractor understand the scale of the job. Several small tags across a site can require a different approach from one continuous area on a single wall. Include all affected locations when requesting a quote so the scope is clear.
An online price based only on square metres may not account for the condition of the wall, site access or the treatment required. A useful quotation explains what is included and any assumptions that need to be checked.
Material and condition influence the method
Brick, stone, render, metal and painted finishes do not all respond to the same treatment. Porous materials may retain pigment below the surface. Existing coatings or damaged areas can limit the methods that are suitable.
The contractor may need to inspect the surface or carry out a test before confirming the proposed process and expected finish. This helps distinguish a straightforward clean from work that needs extra care or a different treatment.
Access and working conditions matter
A ground-level wall with clear access differs from a high surface, a narrow passage or an occupied commercial frontage. Parking, equipment access and the need to separate the work area from pedestrians can affect preparation and working time.
If the property has restricted access hours, deliveries, customers or other contractors on site, share those details early. Planning the work around the site is part of agreeing a useful scope.
Ask what the quote includes
Before booking, establish which areas will be treated and what preparation is included. Ask how adjacent surfaces will be protected and how the work area will be left afterwards. If further treatment or refinishing may be needed, clarify whether that is included or would be quoted separately.
The expected finish also matters. Complete removal cannot be assumed for every surface, especially when pigment has penetrated porous material or the original finish is already damaged.
Make it easier to receive an accurate quote
Send clear photographs, dimensions, the postcode and a short description of access. Include close-ups showing the material and any existing damage. Mention whether the surface has been painted, treated or cleaned before, if you know.
Comparing quotations is easier when each contractor is pricing the same scope. Look at the proposed method, preparation and expected outcome as well as the total figure.

Can you quote from photographs?
Photographs can help with an initial assessment. An inspection or test may still be needed where the material, condition or likely response to cleaning is uncertain.
Is the cheapest quote always comparable?
Only when the scope and assumptions are comparable. Check which surfaces are included, whether access and preparation are covered, and what result the contractor expects.

Make quotations comparable
Give each contractor the same photographs, dimensions and access information. Ask whether the price covers all affected surfaces or only the most visible area. Clarify access arrangements, the intended treatment and any work excluded from the quote. A lower figure based on a smaller scope is not directly comparable with one covering additional elevations, difficult access or separate stain treatment.
Why a small area can still require planning
A small mark above a doorway or beside a busy pedestrian route may need more coordination than a larger area at ground level in an open yard. The surface can also change the work: removing paint from a coating is not the same task as cleaning uncoated masonry. Size is therefore useful information, but it is not a complete pricing method on its own.
Before accepting a quotation
Check the exact area, proposed timing and person responsible for access. Ask what preparation is needed and what result is reasonably expected, including the possibility of residual shadowing. If additional work might be needed, clarify how it will be discussed before it is undertaken. A clear scope is more valuable than an unsupported promise that every mark will disappear.
